Submissions

At Fieldfare, our mission is to explore the importance of place: the qualities that make a place special or unique, and that foster a sense of authentic human attachment and connection. We are particularly interested in the narratives of women and other groups that are traditionally under-represented in print media.

We are looking for stories where the idea of place is interlaced with historical meaning, grounded in tradition and heritage, bolstered by personal connection, and explored with a fresh and interesting perspective. We are interested in beautiful and striking images that can convey the essence of a place to our readers.

Each issue is a mixture of photo essays, travel features, personal narratives, interviews, profiles of artists and gardeners, and beautiful houses and buildings—all with a focus on the importance of place and connection. Our next issue is scheduled to publish in October 2025.

Quarterly writing prompts

We send quarterly writing prompts to our Substack subscribers. These are thematic and provide details on the types of submissions we are seeking. The best of these submissions will be featured on our Substack and promoted on our Instagram account, and will be considered for inclusion in the next print edition of Fieldfare, currently scheduled to publish in October 2025.

What we’re looking for

All our issues are themed and we do not accept pitches for stories, only completed submissions. We put out a call for submissions to our Substack subscribers and on our Instagram account (@fieldfarepress) on a quarterly basis, with information on the theme we are exploring and the deadline for submissions.

  • Travel features: we’re interested in destinations that are a little off the beaten track, where a sense of place and connection can be felt.

  • Interiors features: these can be anything from a tiny apartment to a grand public space. What we want to convey to our readers is the role that place plays in their history, construction, decor, etc.

  • Beautiful gardens: these can be private or public

  • Profiles of artists, craftspeople, gardeners etc.

  • Personal narratives: first-person pieces with a sense of personality, time and place, in response to the theme of the issue.

  • Photo series or essays: please send a small curated selection of images (maximum 10) rather than a link to a whole portfolio. Please explain in your cover email how they relate to the theme of the issue.

The word limit is 1500 words. We accept poetry submissions but do not currently publish fiction or plays.

Due to the high volume of submissions we receive, we regret that we are only able to reply to those we are able to publish. Thank you for taking the time to submit.

Photo submissions

Please have a look at our Instagram account, our Substack, or a previous print issue so you understand the Fieldfare aesthetic before submitting images. Photographic submissions can be series or photo essays. Please send a small curated selection of images (maximum 10) and explain in your cover email how they relate to the theme of the issue. Please do not send a link to a whole portfolio.

If accepted, high resolution photos should be provided at 300 DPI. It's worth noting that photos from your phone, Facebook, or Instagram are generally sized for the web at 72 DPI. This can easily be adjusted using your computer's native photo editing tools. A quick look for “how to adjust dpi of an image” in a search engine will supply options relative to the operating system or application you are using.

When uploading your photo submissions below, please make sure you explain in the relevant field how they relate to the writing prompt or theme provided.

Artwork

We accept standalone artwork submissions related to the theme for each issue. Please explain this connection in your submission cover letter. We occasionally have a need for specific illustrations for articles within Fieldfare. If you are interested in offering your services in that capacity, please email us at info@fieldfarepress.com with your contact information and a link to an example of your work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you pay for submissions published on Substack or in print?

We regret that we are not currently able to offer payment for submissions that are featured on our Substack and/or in print. Our aim with Fieldfare is to promote and encourage new and emerging writers and photographers to the best of our ability on our various platforms and to help them reach a new audience. In time, we hope to be able to also offer payment for accepted submissions. We hope you hope you will consider submitting your work if you feel able to do so within those constraints.

Do you publish short stories or plays?

We do not publish fiction or plays at this time.

If my submission is selected to be published on Substack, will it also be published in print?

We are constrained by space in the print publication, and so not all submissions that are published on Substack will be published in print as well. We will notify those whose submissions have been selected for the print journal in September 2025.
